Drinking more water (part 2)

A few years ago, I wrote a blog post about tips for drinking more water and I feel like it is time to talk about it again. I have seen a ton of people both in person and online talking about how they want to drink more water this year and I figured I could share more about how I drink 70+ ounces of water a day.

I get my water consumption in via both “chug sessions” and sipping throughout the day. I know ” chug sessions” sounds weird, but that is just what it is. I fill a glass at the sink with room temp water and chug the entire glass, sometimes two. I know for a lot of people this sounds horrible, but it gives me a chance to get it done. I just stand there and drink. (For those of you wondering, WATER is the only thing I drink this way. I could not chug a beer if my life depended on it.) I like using room temp water as it goes down easy and does not chill my body. I try to do this a few times a day with the most important chug sessions right after I wake up and right before bed.

My second method of drinking (WATER, people) is throughout the day. I like to keep water at my desk at work or near me at home. For me, the key is to have a cup or bottle you really like. What works for you really depends on your needs, but I personally LOVE my $3 reusable Starbucks tumbler. I know it is simple, but it works for me. I can have it at my desk, at home, in the car, or on the go. At 24 ounces I only have to refill a few times a day and I am good to go. Yes, it is sitting next to me right now, and yes, I did just drink some water.

A typical day for me starts with a 10 oz. glass of water from the tap a few minutes after I get up. At work I generally fill my 24 oz. cup twice, sometimes three times. I then drink 10 oz. of water at the sink before dinner, a glass with dinner and the at least one more “chug session” before bed.  No wonder I am in the bathroom so much. (Sorry) Try adding a glass of water at a few of these times if you’re still struggling with getting enough water.

I know a bunch of people carry water with them but still feel like they don’t drink enough. My only real tip for that is to double your sips. If you go in for one sip, take two. Keep going. You will start to get used to drinking more and it will become natural. Hate the taste of water? Check out this post I wrote about making easy infused water with the help of your freezer.

Below are a few water bottle/cup options you might like. The Starbucks one I have is only sold in stores.
water bottle options
1. Like your water cold? This one stays cold all day.
2. Here is a great option if you want glass.
3. Love S’well bottles? Go for it!
4. Want a visual of how much your drinking and when to drink it? Try a motivational bottle.
5. These are super cute. Go for the 24 oz.

My wellness planner /meal tracker

When Me and my Big Ideas (the Happy Planner people) released the new items for winter 2018 there were few items I felt I immediately needed, however as time passed I started to think that maybe the wellness extension kit was for me. I kept checking my Michaels stores to to see if they had it but I never found one.

I have noticed that when I do not have meals, snacks, ect planned out I tend to either binge on junk or just not eat and I then I end up in a grumpy mood and just kind of over everything. However when I eat well I feel so much better emotionally.  I have also noticed that I have gained some weight over the last year. My job is more sedentary than ever and we eat a lot of food. Between the new job and just being a lazy person I am not doing the best I can for my body. I want to be proud of myself and the way I look and I just don’t feel I am there.

My goals with the new planner is to plan out my meals so I know the night before what to bring for lunch and snacks as well as what I need to take out for dinner. Generally, I am pretty good about dinners except the nights that my husband isn’t home. So, I am actually going to have a plan for those nights. wether it be a leftover option or something easy to make that I will actually enjoy. I want to point out that I am not “dieting.” There is no restriction here, but more of a tracking system to plan what I will eat and keep track of what I have eaten. This will also help to go back and see how foods affect my moods. Fun, right?

So on my last attempt to find the wellness extension I randomly picked up a small recollections fitness planner. (Have you seen the 2018 recollections spiral planners? They really stepped up their game.) Anyways, I loved that it tracked water intake and was super cute. I then walked over to the Mambi products and saw the mini fitness planner. There were only like 5 planners left total and one of them was mini fitness. What a win. Anyways, it had a place for meals, snacks, activity, water intake, and calories. Although I did not need all of these sections, it really seemed like the best option so I grabbed that and the mini fitness sticker book.

Anyhoo, after reviewing the wellness extension online and comparing it to this mini I think I ended up with something that will work better for my needs. It tracks all my meals, exercise, and water and can be carried in my bag whereas the extension pack was just going to stay with my home planner which does not go everywhere with me. The fitness planner does track calories which I will skip as I do not collect that information. I am a little disappointed that the wellness extension did not include more, I feel like it was more of a regular planner with an emphasis on wellness/self care instead of a planner just for that. I guess that would work for some, it is just not what I was looking for for me.

I will also be tracking my steps in this mini planner. I have used a jawbone in the past but did not want something bulky on my wrist so I bought a Jawbone up move so that I can clip it into my top, pocket or bra to track my steps on the sly. Bonus: These are less than $15, what a great deal. My *goal* is 10k a day which is where I was back when I was a busy Children’s librarian running around in the summer. I know I will not hit it every day, but I want to try. This may mean walks before or after work or taking

I also bought a new scale to track my weight. I have never personally owned a scale as I do not take much heed in what it says, but I want to have a way to track progress a little more. I purchased this scale for under $12 on amazon and it works great. It can connect to apps but I did not fuss with that because who needs their phone and scale to talk, really.

So this is where I am at right now. I just bought all this yesterday so it is new to me but I think it is a step in the right direction. I will share more in a few months once I get a better feeling for what I am doing. Until then if you have questions ask me here or on Instagram.

Drinking more water

One of my goals for this year was to drink more water.  I knew this would be an easy goal to conquer as long as I made myself learn a few new habits.

How to drink more water every day

To make this a habit I added to my habits planner printable so that I’d see it daily and get to mark it off if I’m successful.

How much water should we drink?  I haven’t found a solid answer.  the old eight glasses a day is a great start, but remember that is talking about eight 8 oz glasses for a total of 64 oz.  I generally drink 10 oz at a time so for me thats only six and a half glasses. According to the Mayo Clinic women should drink 2.2 liters a day or 74 ounces however they go on to state that up to 20% of our water intake may come from foods such as fruits.  Also, non-water beverages such as coffee, soda, milk , and beer can contribute to that total but should not be the majority of it.    Look into it yourself and see what you think is best for you.  I personally know I feel physically better if I drink at least 50 oz. a day.

One of the most important aspects of drinking more water is appealing to your own tastes.  To me, this means finding the water that you enjoy.  Don’t like tap water?  Invest in a filtration system.  Need ice? Make sure you have a good ice maker or trays. If you really hate water, try infused water. Also, the drinkware you are using must be something that you enjoy.  Over the years I have tried everything from the water bottles from the vending machine, to Nalgene bottles, stainless steel, tumblers with straws, and glass bottles.  I just recently became aware of my personal favorite, a pint glass.  I’ve come to the realization that my favorite way to drink water is room temperature standing up from a pint glass. (Particularly those with our wedding logo on them.)

So what did I do?  I brought a few glasses to work.  I left one in my locker in the break room, I placed one in the cabinets, and I keep the third in my office.  I grab a glass, fill it up and drink the entire glass several times a day and I enjoy it.  I am lucky to have a sink to use in my office but a two liter bottle or other container would work fine also.

Will this system for for you? Probably not, but think about what you like. Go to the store and touch some water bottles and pick one that you want to carry.  Find something that matches your personal style as well as is functional. Maybe you are fine with a gallon jug or a Dasani bottle.  If thats what works thats awesome.

If you still haven’t found your dream water bottle consider one of these options:

S’well– Many people enjoy these stainless steel bottles.

Mason Bar Company – I just ordered the regular lid to use with this size jar.  I am swooning over the cuffs too.

Infuser bottle – This is the one I have; it comes with a cool bag and a shaker too for protein shakes.

Ello– This company makes great glass water bottles.  This one has a rubber skin to protect the glass. You can also find them at Target sometimes.

Plastic Tumbler– I’m sure you’ve seen these everywhere but they are always cool.
